The Right Place for Millimeter and Terahertz Wave Utilization in Beyond 5G/6G

UHF and microwave bands have been used in mobile communication systems, but with 5G the use of millimeter wave bands has begun, and studies have begun for the use of terahertz wave bands in Beyond 5G/6G. In terms of wavelength, this means using a range from tens of centimeters to several millimeters, and in terms of frequency, from several hundred MHz to several hundred GHz, a range of about three orders of magnitude. Since the physical properties of electromagnetic waves differ greatly over such a wide range, it is natural to use them in an appropriate manner for each band so that their properties can be maximized. On the other hand, from a system point of view, it is better to use a single system for each frequency band than to develop different systems for each band and operate multiple systems. Furthermore, from an economic point of view, it is important to reduce the maintenance and operating costs of the equipment.
In the 2030s, when Beyond 5G/6G will be introduced, a Cyber Physical System (CPS) will be formed. Data in real space will be collected via communication systems, reconstructed, analyzed, and predicted in cyberspace, and driven into real space based on the results.
This cycle is called the CPS loop. The goal is to realize an inclusive, sustainable, and dependable society by spreading the CPS to every corner of social life. In order to achieve this goal, the core of the CPS loop is the next generation mobile communication system, namely Beyond 5G/6G. It is important to ensure that the various radio bands in Beyond 5G/6G are used in the right places in order to meet these objectives and goals.

Iwao Hosako received his Ph.D. from the University of Tokyo in 1993. After two years with NKK Corp’s ULSI Laboratory from 1993 to 1994, he joined the Communications Research Laboratory (former name of NICT).  He is currently the Executive Director of the Beyond 5G R&D Promotion Unit and the Terahertz Research Center at the National Institute of Information and Communications Technology (NICT), Japan. His research focuses on terahertz band semiconductor devices, cameras, and wireless systems. He is currently served as the leader of the 6G Working Group of the Terahertz Systems Consortium, the vice-Chair of both the IEEE 802.15 Task Group 3mb and the IEEE 802.15 Standing Committee Terahertz (SC-THz).

Progress in Mobile Network (RAN/CORE) Virtualization, Intel's Next Steps in Virtualization

As of 2023, the transition to virtualization and cloud-native technologies in networks is proceeding rapidly. At this year's MWC23, with "True Open" as the keyword, the path to openness as the next step after virtualization was revealed. At the same time, however, the challenges and operational difficulties of going open have become apparent, and it seems as though the company has begun to steer the course toward the 2025-2030 period.
In this session, we will introduce Intel's recently announced 4th generation Intel🄬 Xeon🄬 Scalable Processor for vRAN and its efforts to reduce power consumption around CORE networking with examples from Intel's perspective as a semiconductor manufacturing company.
We will also show how this set of technologies is optimized for the most demanding workloads and share how we are working with our customers and partners to build an agile and flexible network infrastructure.

On Beyond 5G/6G world, where communications will be integrated into everything

KDDI released KDDI VISION 2030, “The creation of a society in which anyone can make their dreams a reality,
by enhancing the power to connect”. KDDI has been promoting efforts to "connect" lives, lifestyles, and hearts, using 5G communications.
Based on KDDI VISION 2030, KDDI Research has been conducting lifestyle researches to create and verify future lifestyles and use cases for the Beyond 5G / 6G era, where communications will be integrated into everything. We have also been conducting researches and developments of advanced technologies to promote innovation and transformation in society as well as to realize future lifestyles and use cases.
This talk will introduce the latest research topics and achievements on future lifestyles as well as cutting edge technologies on such as optical and wireless communications, security, and 3D video transmission, after introducing KDDI VISION 2030 and use cases for 5G SA.

Satoshi KONISHI joined KDDI in 1993. Since then, he was mainly involved in research and development in wireless communication systems such as LEO satellite systems, mesh-type fixed wireless access systems, and mobile cellular systems. He led development of base stations for LTE in KDDI while contributing for standardizations in 3GPP, 3GPP2 and ITU-R. He also conducted numerous demonstrations using 5G and 5G commercialization in KDDI. Since April 2020, he has been leading B5G/6G as Head of Advanced Technology Laboratories of KDDI Research, Inc. as well as leading Beyond 5G white paper by Beyond 5G promotion consortium in Japan.

The Space ICT Promotion Initiative Forum - Understanding the future of the space business  

New Wave of Space Business and Hopes on Space ICT Promotion Initiative Forum (SPIF)
Space business is now experiencing a huge departure such that main players have changed from government to private sectors including ventures, and that many small satellite constellation businesses have been appearing. Varied companies are entering space business from other fields, where movements to create new values are occurring with space as an “Enabler.” This seminar will explain such new movements of space business and their future vision, and also introduce a community “Space ICT Promotion Initiative Forum (SPIF)” and our hopes on this community.

A Study on Millimeter Wave (mmW) Band High Gain Lens Antenna for Non-Terrestrial Network (NTN)
Beyond 5G/6G is expected to extend the communication area not only to the ground but also to the sea, air, remote areas, and space, therefore, research and development for the realization of non-terrestrial network (NTN) is actively conducted. However, NTN requires high-gain millimeter-wave antennas with high propagation loss. We focus on lens antennas as high-gain antennas and present the results of our investigations.

Development of optical ground stations for the testbed in NICT
Laser communication has been studied and developed in recent years as a promising means to increase the speed of communication between satellite and optical ground station. Moreover, the laser communication should be optimum for the cryptographic communication due to its high directivity, and it is considered to be a very important means of communication to ensure communication with high level of security, for which demand is expected to increase in the future. NICT is currently developing optical ground stations that can be used as a testbed. We are now constructing a 2-m aperture optical ground station in Kashima, 40-cm optical ground stations installed in three locations: Koganei, Kajima and Kanbe, a transportable optical ground station, and a small portable ground station. We introduces the details of these optical ground stations and their use cases in this presentation.
