Key Technologies for Terahertz Communications: Mechanical Tuning and Radio-Wave Materials

Terahertz (THz) frequencies are expected to play a key role in enabling ultra-fast, low-latency wireless communications in Beyond 5G/6G systems. However, the extremely short wavelengths in the 150–300 GHz range make these systems highly sensitive to mechanical misalignments, especially at critical interfaces such as transmission line–waveguide transitions.
As a mechanical tuning solution, we propose a tunable waveguide transition module that employs a membrane-based micro-actuator to dynamically control the position of the back short. This structure allows for real-time impedance matching, significantly improving robustness against assembly errors and environmental variations.
In parallel, we present essential radio-wave materials, including wideband, transparent absorbers and radomes designed for millimeter-wave (mmW) and THz bands. These passive components effectively reduce undesired reflections and electromagnetic interference while preserving signal integrity, supporting the deployment of scalable and reliable terahertz transceiver systems.
Together, these mechanical and material innovations represent key enabling technologies for the next generation of terahertz communication infrastructure.
