From Research to Standards: Measurement Perspectives on 6G
As research on 6G advances toward global standardization, the next generation of wireless systems is expanding beyond peak data rate improvements toward a broader vision encompassing energy efficiency, intelligent spectrum usage, sensing capabilities, and AI-native network design. Current industry developments and 3GPP activities highlight how 6G will integrate communication, computing, and sensing into a unified platform supporting immersive services, advanced automation, and strategic infrastructure applications.
Artificial intelligence and machine learning are expected to become foundational elements of the physical layer, enabling neural receivers, adaptive channel feedback, and intelligent signal processing. These approaches promise improved spectral efficiency, robustness, and energy efficiency while supporting new services such as extended reality (XR) and context-aware applications requiring ultra-low latency. Increasing uplink demand driven by distributed sensing, wearable devices, and edge intelligence is also reshaping spectrum use across low-, mid-, and high-frequency bands, including FR3, mmWave, and emerging THz ranges.
In addition to communication, 6G introduces Integrated Sensing and Communication (ISAC), enabling wireless networks to detect and interpret objects and environments for applications in automotive, industrial, environmental, and security domains. Supported by technologies such as extreme massive MIMO, photonic-assisted signal generation, and distributed architectures, 6G is evolving into a general-purpose digital infrastructure that combines connectivity, sensing, and intelligence, enabling efficient and scalable deployment across diverse use cases.
