Advancing Labor-Saving and Automation of Snow Removal Operations through Remote Monitoring and Control Using Local 5G — Technical Challenges and Solutions Demonstrated at Wakkanai Airport —

As the working-age population continues to decline, labor shortages are becoming increasingly severe. This issue is particularly critical for airports in snowy regions, where stable winter operations and on-time performance are essential.
Snow removal at airports must be completed within limited time windows while strictly adhering to runway safety standards. Therefore, labor-saving and automation are indispensable for maintaining operational quality.
In this project, a consortium of six organizations—NTT DOCOMO Business, Hokkaido Airports Co., Ltd., Nippon Koei Co., Ltd., PERSOL AVC Technology Co., Ltd., PERSOL Cross Technology Co., Ltd., and DOCOMO Technology, Inc.—integrated their respective technologies to conduct a field demonstration at Wakkanai Airport.
The demonstration focused on key technologies for labor-saving and automation, including the drive-by-wire (electronic control) conversion of snow removal vehicles and remote monitoring utilizing a local 5G network.
This presentation introduces the system architecture of remote monitoring and control enabled by local 5G, along with the technical challenges encountered during implementation and the solutions adopted to address them.
Furthermore, based on the results of the field demonstration at Wakkanai Airport, we discuss the applicability of local 5G to airport operations and outline future development and deployment prospects.
