DOCOMO’s Initiatives Toward the 6G Era
Looking ahead to the 2030s, when 6G is expected to enable new social and industrial paradigms, this session presents NTT DOCOMO’s initiatives and future direction, considering not only the evolution of communications infrastructure but also the growing adoption of AI and big-data utilization in everyday life and business.
NTT DOCOMO, INC.
Senior Vice President / General Manager of 6G-Tech Department Hiroyuki Oto
Hiroyuki Oto joined NTT in 1991. Subsequently led research and development projects on core network nodes and operation systems for commercial mobile networks up to 5G at NTT DOCOMO.
In 2016, realized the world’s first network function virtualization (NFV) running the Evolved Packet Core (EPC) software from multiple vendors, which was later expanded to other network nodes within the network.
Currently leading research and development projects focused on 5G Evolution & 6G, including wireless access networks, network architecture, and Non-Terrestrial Networks (NTN).

Connected Products, Stronger Business — Building Customer Engagement with AI and Connectivity
A common challenge in product-based businesses is that customer relationships often end after the sale. By incorporating wireless connectivity into products, companies can create ongoing customer touchpoints even after purchase. This not only opens up new revenue opportunities, but also creates ways to expand existing businesses.
In this session, we will introduce how connected products strengthen customer relationships and existing business models through real-world examples, such as monitoring services that maintain continuous engagement in daily life and predictive maintenance use cases that help prevent equipment failures before they occur.
We will also explore how the data generated from connected products can create new value through AI. In addition, the session will explain the architecture required to embed AI into products, as well as the wireless connectivity requirements needed to support these solutions.

Chief EvangelistAtsushi Ueda
We have been involved in supporting 5G wireless technology since the early experimental stages conducted by mobile carriers, and we operate a testing facility that conducts performance testing on a wide range of carrier 5G and local 5G wireless devices sold in Japan, regardless of manufacturer.
Furthermore, we provide consulting services to companies considering the adoption of Local 5G, covering every phase from wireless equipment selection and radio wave propagation simulation to maintenance and operation, and we handle one of the largest numbers of such projects in Japan. We also provide detailed explanations of Japan’s Radio Wave Act, support for obtaining certifications, and comprehensive consulting on proof-of-concept trials and commercial cases to system integrators (SIers) offering Local 5G solutions and overseas 5G manufacturers seeking to enter the Japanese market.

Causes and Challenges of Japan’s Labor Shortage: Three Essential Conditions for Accepting Foreign Workers
Japanese transportation industry is projected to face a shortage of approximately 278,000 drivers by 2028. As the country’s working-age population continues to decline and the aging of the frontline workforce grows increasingly severe, competition for human resources is no longer confined to companies within the same sector. It now extends across blue-collar occupations and even among neighboring countries, making the acceptance of foreign workers an urgent and unavoidable issue.
At the same time, however, Japan’s systems for receiving foreign workers remain far from sufficient. Attitudes such as “When in Rome, do as the Romans do” can still be heard at worksites, together with persistent misunderstanding and prejudice, all of which influence how prospective foreign workers perceive Japan and the anxieties they may feel about coming here.
Drawing on many years of reporting on the transportation industry and the working realities of drivers, as well as extensive experience teaching Japanese language and culture to international students and expatriates from a wide range of countries, this session will delve, together with participants, into the requirements for accepting foreign drivers in the industry and the challenges involved.

The Edge Environment Required by Physical AI and the Future of DX
With the advent of the Generative AI era, interest is growing in Physical AI, which bridges the physical and digital world. There are also high expectations that Japan's expertise in manufacturing can be leveraged in this field. Physical AI requires an edge computing environment to operate. It is the environment that combines Generative AI, manufacturing, and edge computing that will create the value of Physical AI.
In this presentation, we will consider how our society and business will evolve from both technological and business perspectives, taking into account trends in physical AI and the edge computing that support it.
